Steel Magnolias

Harling

About this production
An amateur productions by arrangement with Concord Theatricals, chosen specifically to raise money for Diabetes UK. It featured on NLive Radio, Northampton, and BBC Radio Northampton as well as in the Northampton Chronicle and as part of the Diabetes UK fundraising newsletters. Diabetes UK said “We wanted to say a huge thank you and tell you how amazing we think you are…there are 4.5 million people in the UK with diabetes [and] the money you’ve raised means [they] can keep getting the information, advice and support they need…and our scientists can keep finding new ways to treat diabetes, prevent it and one day cure it.”

"I would rather have 30 minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special" (Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie)

33 years ago in November - Diabetes Awareness Month - this quintessential story of friendship and community, based on the true story of Robert harling’s sister Susan, was brought to the big screen. The iconic film of this powerful play is widely loved, highly quotable, and for Robert Harling’s family – an emotional support; not only were Shelby’s nurses in the film some of those who cared for Susan, but his mother treasured being able to see Julia Roberts in the role of Shelby get up and walk away from the hospital bed when the scene wrapped. Since then, thanks to the relentless work of Diabetes UK, the prognosis and opportunity for a "normal" life for those managing Type 1 Diabetes – even of the severity of Susan/Shelby has greatly improved, with much also being done to prevent the onset of Type 2.

CLICK's production celebrates the strength of friendship through adversity, and the unabashed zest of Susan Harling, to seize joy in every moment of time we are granted.
